Queen Elizabeth's holiday break lasts longer than most—but even hers came to an end today, when she attended her first public royal engagement of 2020.

The Queen arrived in King's Lynn wearing a peach and orange outfit with matching hat by Angela Kelly, her longtime dresser. She was there to visit the RAF Marham, a Royal Air Force military base, as the station's Honorary Air Commodore.

This year, she's returning to her public royal duties just a bit earlier than usual. Traditionally, the Queen enjoys some time out of the spotlight at Sandringham, her estate in Norfolk, through the holidays until February 6—the anniversary of her father King George VI's death, and when she became the reigning monarch.

And while today marks her return to the public eye, the Queen's winter break has been far from tranquil. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle caught her by surprise when they announced their intention to step back from their royal roles in early January, forcing the royals to work together quickly to outline a plan for the couple's future.

It's since been reported by the Evening Standard that Harry asked to meet with the Queen, who in turn requested that Harry talk everything over with Prince Charles—but that conversation was "blocked by courtiers." And the royal family had been aware of Harry and Meghan's intentions on some level for awhile; the Queen herself eventually noted in a personal statement that an agreement was reached "following many months of conversations and more recent discussions."

Nonetheless, she wasn't prepared for the Sussexes to break the news (though it's also been reported by Harper's Bazaar that the couple felt they had to move quickly, after a tabloid got wind of their plans).

In her recent Christmas speech, the Queen acknowledged that 2019 had been a "bumpy" year. Sadly, the royals may be facing another in 2020.
